App of the Week 19/08/10 - Air Video

Orchard creative consultant Rick's weekly iPhone / iPad app of choice.

I've been asked to document some of my ramblings into a weekly blog on this 'ere site. Apparently people think that I'm some kind of an Apple fanboy so I'll start by giving a bit of an apology: the apps I'll be writing about every week will be either iPhone or iPad apps. So If you're on Android or some other gubbins, then you'd probably better not read this because is highly likely that what I'm talking about will not be available for your handset.

So, now we've got that out of the way i'd like to bring you this week's app: Air Video

What it does: Basically it lets you stream video and audio over wifi from your Mac (or maybe PC, Windows gives me migraines so obviously I haven't tried) to your iPhone or iPad. Meaning that your entire movie library is available to view anywhere in your house without having to sit in front of your monitor or convert the (usually massive) files and transfer them to your device.

What you need to do: It's really easy to use (I reckon even your mum could do it) all you need to do is download the server to your mac, tell it where your movies are kept so it can access them (so basically select your movie and pr0n folders). Then buy the app from the app store for a measly £1.79, select the relevant folders and files and start playing them. The app will even convert the files to mp4 for you - you can either wait while it does this or let it do it "on the fly" while you watch. It couldn't be easier.

Here's some pictures of it working:
