The Talented Will Always Rise

Yesterday evening, NABS hosted 'An Audience with Women Leaders' at the People's History Museum in Manchester. The ladies of Orchard went along to learn how to be successful in our industry.

The leading female voices of Women Leaders are aspirational and all have senior positions within the media and advertising industry.

Our host, the very stylish MD of BJL, Nicky Unsworth, was joined on the sofa by Sue Little, CEO of McCann Manchester, Elizabeth Fagan, Marketing Director at Boots and Tess Alps, Executive Chairman at Thinkbox.

The event was held in the stunning People's History Museum, one of the many buildings you walk past daily and never quite appreciate it's beauty. It was in fact a perfect location for the event, creating an incredibly relaxed atmosphere. It almost put the five men in an audience of 70 women at ease.

The discussion kicked off with an insight into how each member of the panel found themselves in the industry. It was quite a relief to find out that the entire panel stumbled into advertising and it was never part of their Big Plan. Sue started out as a telephonist, and Elizabeth's career moved her from being a bored science teacher to working for Boots Retail. She went on to be responsible for one of the best known, and one of my favourite, campaigns; Boots - Here Come the Girls.

So, what was it like for these three women to get to the top in what is historically a man's world? They all agreed that enjoying your career on the way to the top was as important as making it to the top. All three women gave us ladies in the audience a reality check on how to get to the top; not only as woman but from being a graduate, an apprentice or simply somebody looking to change their career. The strong message was to be confident, be tenacious and be passionate about what you do. If you have the talent, it will be recognised and actually - it’s not about being a man or a woman, a graduate, or an apprentice: it’s about being the best at what you do and having the confidence to get that across.

For me the best advise came from Tess Alps: "Next time you see a job advertised that you know you will be perfect for, act like that job is yours."

The ladies were posed with the question of how they balance work / family life – a question a lot of women face on a daily basis. The general consensus was that if you love your job, and dedicate your time to both aspects of your life, you will suddenly find yourself making it work. Its empowering… and bloody exhausting, I’m sure.

What stuck with me most was if you choose a career you love and want to develop, there are no barriers to your success.

You can have it all – if you want it, go out and make it happen.
