Gap's New Logo Design - Think you can do better?

The new Gap logo is seemingly the most controversial logo produced since the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Since the release of Gap's logo rebrand yesterday on their website, the design world has been up in arms with many a discussion expressing their staggering negative opinions.

Even though I'm not the biggest fan of the logo myself, I was personally taken aback at such a strong response from the twitter community and their comments. I appreciate and quite like the apparent concept, leaving their old logo fading in the distance of their bold new image - but as many people have described before me, there is something quite awkward about the logo as a whole. It doesn't seem to represent their clean, simple and preppy style of clothes quite like their previous one, which they have had for 20+ years.

Is it an American Apparel rip off? Is it all a big publicity stunt? Who knows... but you could have the chance to have an input! Today on Facebook, Gap responded for the first time following the heated debate over their rebrand:

So after working with Laird & Partners, and 'launching' their new logo on their website, they appear to have moved backwards to a crowdsourcing project - which makes me veer even more to thinking towards the publicity stunt side of things. At least this is a (possible) chance, for all the unhappy designers, to have a go and put forward some of their own ideas. So logo haters..... watch this gap.

  • It's a real shame that they are looking to replace such an iconic brand mark with something so forgetable. There are a million and one logo's that use that font and a randomly placed block of colour. In my opinion they should be using a top agency's most senior creatives to help this respected and highly recognisable brand to evolve, rather than letting the work experience lad loose on the brief armed only with Micrsoft Word...

  • I think that whoever designed this has been highly unoriginal in their choice of type. The blue square looks unresolved and like an afterthought. It's bland and soulless. This is yet another example of the way in which helvetica is often used without consideration for the target audience or the product. Very little thought has gone into this job.
