Going.. Going.. GONE!

My thoughts on a designer who took an 'innovative' approach to finding work in the Creative Industries.

Hello! I'm Oli, the newest addition to the Orchard team.  Having recently graduated from the Design Management degree course at Salford University I was looking for an opportunity that would see me getting involved in the business side of the NW's creative industry.

So after a couple of gruelling interviews, and a taster day in the office, I started properly with Orchard earlier this week. One of my first tasks was to spend a little time coming to terms with the world of Twitter (please feel free to follow me and say hi @orchard_oli ).

Whilst scrolling round twitter I stumbled across a bizarre story of a graphic designer who has chosen to auction himself off on ebay! (has he not heard of Orchard?)

It struck me that this was not only and unusual way to find employment, but also a potentially costly method - he had promised to work for the closing bid / salary whatever it was. The designer, who's previous income was £27,000, had only managed to notch up a meagre £3,100 through the online marketplace before Ebay pulled the listing stating it was "in breach of their policies".

The designer in question had recently returned from France after their aspirations to start a new life running a campsite failed to get off the ground. On returning to the UK he applied for jobs nationwide, but found he was competing against hundreds of applicants for every job - a common story unfortunately in these difficult times. Consequently he took the desperate measure of listing himself as a graphic designer on eBay.

So if you're in a similar predicament, before you resort to extreme measures, give us a call here at Orchard. We may just find you the perfect job and save you the costs of your eBay fees into the bargain!!
