Goliath slayed by Social Media

Interesting end to a boom year for social media. It seems David and Goliath has been re-enacted in the digital age, with the little man on the street using facebook and twitter as it's sling to slay the music industry giant that is Simon Cowell.

So before the recent media whirlwind began, would anyone in their right mind have laid a bet on Rage Against The Machine bagging Christmas number 1 with a song called "Killing In The Name Of"? Not a cat in hell's chance...

Much has been said about the shift of power to the consumer with the new wave of web technologies, and countless instances have proven time and again that this is the case. But non more prominently than this. At a time when it seemed there really could be no end to Simon Cowell's march for world domination a simple backlash from a normally silent section of the public snowballed so quickly and publicly, demonstrating on the world stage just how powerful social media and the individuals using it can be.

If there are marketeers, pr companies, retailers, service organisations etc out there who have turned a blind eye to it so far, time to pull your head out of the sand. In the meantime, for those with young kids, make sure you're near the volume control if you've got the radio on during Christmas dinner...

All the best!
Andy
