Paper at the cutting edge of creativity

Orchard's Katie reviews Manchester exhibition 'The First Cut'

So last Thursday, you could have found Joe, Joanne and I at The Manchester Art Gallery viewing 'The First Cut'. Coincidently, this also happened to be the opening evening of The Manchester Weekender; a weekend-long snapshot of the best of the city’s art and culture, so we were in for a treat.

‘The First Cut’ is a chance to witness the creative potential of possibly the most modest of materials. 31 international artists have been busy with paper, imagining and constructing all things unimaginable, from a forest of paper trees to delicate lace-like patterns. Many of these pieces have been created especially for the exhibition and travelled from around the world to be included. British visual artist, Rob Ryan, famous for his detailed paper cut outs, is one of those that can be found among the gathering of talent.

This is paper at the cutting edge...

There were many people, from all walks of life, there to enjoy the space and engage with the artwork. The diversity of the show makes it hard to have a favourite piece. However, a particularly memorable moment was peering through Andrea Dezso’s tunnel of miniature worlds, produced in books and looking across to see the priceless expression on Joe’s face, upon seeing Manabu Hangai’s large leafed trees rotating in all their glory. Whilst Joanne and I marveled over Claire Brewster’s birds, so delicately made out of maps. Overall, I’ve never seen so many imaginative ways of using the blank page that so many creatives fear. From the minute, to the real wow factor pieces – it’s well worth a look!

There are also plenty of events and activities on following the preview, so don’t worry if you feel you have missed out! A list of what’s on can be found here…

The First Cut - What's On

Many of these activities are run by the artists themselves, which are great opportunities to get involved. Very inspiring and thought provoking, it’s running until January 5th - this will arrive before you know it, so get going now!
