Pecha Kucha Explained

Here's a run down of last night's Pecha Kucha event in Leeds.

Last night I went to my first Pecha Kucha Night in Leeds, which is an event that I've wanted to go to for a while. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the Pecha Kucha format and history, here is a brief outline. Pecha Kucha, originating from Japan, was devised by a couple of architects trying to solve the problem of over-talkative fellow architects when presenting. A solution was proposed, and the Pecha Kucha format was born.

Each presenter has 20 slides to show, and each slide is only to last for the duration of 20 seconds. This in turn produces a fast paced, exciting series of presentations with the speaker trying to keep in time with their slides. Not only this, but as our attention span is supposed to only last between 6-10 mins (so I've been told) - it is the perfect way to keep the audience entertained.

These events are happening globally, and are a great way for primarily designers, creatives and architects to show case their work, talk about their inspirations and general interests. You can pretty much present whatever topic you want - as long as it's legal of course. It's an informal night, were you can grab a beer or two, sit and listen to a wide range of engaging talks.

At the Leeds' Pecha Kucha, there were a variety of presenters:

- Paul Unett, who told us his story about cycling across Canada.
- Owen Turner, from USB Studio, discussing examples of branding from his childhood.
- Ian Anderson, from The Designers Republic unfortunately had to cancel.
- Huren Marsh, exploring pieces of art that showed interiors, The Interior Thoughts the Eye of the Artist.
- James Fathers, Design is Intelligence Made Visible, unfortunately had to cancel.
- Michael Canning, Sustainable and Ecological Design.
- Emma Sutton from Leeds city council, advertising the cultural wealth of Leeds.
- Madeline Irwin & Jo Jessop, Cape UK expressing the importance of the management of creativity in education.

Here are a couple of my favourite presentations that I found on the Pech Kucha website, which show you just how the presentations work:

If you like what you see, check out the Pecha Kucha website for a night held near you.
