We get involved in a fair bit of industry networking within the local area and I have to admit that this event has proven to be the most amusing and sociable of them all.
Just got back from Social Media Cafe Manchester (smc_mcr) and I felt compelled to let you know about what is, after my second visit, proving to be a very entertaining and informative event.
A little daunting at first glance to newbies as clearly lots of attendees already know each other, the semi permanent home of the BBC Manchester's in-house bar on Oxford Road seems perfect for this meeting.
Crucially, it has beer (as well as a wide selection of other beverages for those looking for something more!), ample room, and free WiFi, as long as you can read the key correctly from the poster and get it whole into your phone or Notebook.
What makes this event different for me is that whilst it's relaxed and informal, and comfortingly accessible, it genuinely makes an effort each month to provide a series of optional talks (lectures seminars would be to formal a title), followed by a group event or discusion.
Last night's debate was a bit of fun hinged around the topic of 'Search versus Social' with an open forum to allow everyone the opportunity to join in, however the real stars of the show were DEB as Nicky Campbell and Maria as Carol Smiley, combined with the fact all participants had to utilise Twitter to set the questions.
Previously we enjoyed a great tongue in cheek review of the History of Ceefax followed by Ceefax Bingo, courtesy of regular contributer Dave Mee from TANDOT Ltd.
It's a great platform for any speaker with a digital point to make, you don't need to be great you just need to be relevant, and people will listen and more imprtantly feedback to you. If you are curious about something it's a great place to discuss it with others. And this is the charm of the event, you may or may not learn something new, but you may get to contribute to something that will be new to others.
Social Media Cafe is held monthly, see our event calander for details of the next event, or sign up to socialmediamanchester.ning.com
