The Creative Cup: The greatest cup competition in world football?

With FIFA's bureaucrats in disarray and trust in the administration waning by the day, the football world needed something to restore confidence in the beautiful game.

The late May Bank Holiday weekend brought an opportunity for events on the field to do just that with the gathering of the North West's creative industry for the 2nd Creative Cup.

20 teams pulled on their shirts and laced up their boots to show what they could do away from their Macs and with a ball at their feet, and those who came to watch weren't disappointed. Following a few late withdrawls, the format was re-jigged into 4 groups of 5 teams to play each other once, and with the top 2 qualifying for the knockout stages.

The Orchard Shoots team were re-drawn on Pitch 2 which had us facing one of last year's opponents TBWA, along with The Gate Films, Evolutia, and first up Future Designs in game 3.

After the opening two games both served up close fought, seven goal thrillers, Orchard's opener was a less goal-laden affair with Orchard taking the lead through sharp shooting copywriter Keith Price, and both Andy (Diane's better half) Jackson and Ben (MMU digital preacher) Keegan hitting the woodwork on a number of occasions. Unfortunately those missed chances proved costly, and the 1-0 lead turned out to be the pinnacle of the game for Orchard, and indeed the tournament, as a disputed, converted penalty conceded by stand-in goalkeeper Mike (The Boss) Carter was followed quickly by a 2nd goal which proved to be the winner for Future Designs.

Three further group games followed, starting with Captain Carter hobbling off with a recurrence of a recent calf injury within a few minutes of deserting his goalkeeping duties to become a striker, and during which Orchard shipped 15 goals, with the only solitary reply coming in a 5-1 defeat by TBWA, again from the boot of 'free-scoring' Keith Price.

After licking our wounds, and analysing what could have been, we took to the balcony to watch the knock out stages, and see our group winners, The Gate Films, progress to the final after holding their nerve in a nail-biting semi-final penalty shoot out win over Photolink, where they faced newcomers Made By Shape. There was some great ability on show, and despite The Gate Films staging a mid-game comeback, Made By Shape ran out worthy 5-2 winners to be crowned Creative Cup Champions for 2011.

Everyone's efforts and exertions also helped raise £1,900 for this year's chosen charity, St Ann's Hospice.
