Young marketers prove they've got what it takes at CIM's The Pitch 2010

Manchester's top students win The Chartered Institute of Marketing's prestigious competition - The Pitch 2010

The Chartered Institute of Marketing’s competition for budding marketers - The Pitch 2010 – has been won by Team ‘Thinkplant’ from Manchester Metropolitan University. Now in its 23rd year, and sponsored by McCann Manchester, the pitching and award ceremony took on Wednesday 24 February at Bonis Hall, Cheshire.

Winners Ric Roberts, Caroline Hodgson and Emily McGleave (Team 'Thinkplant' Pictured Above) are three of the North West’s brightest marketing students. They were selected for the Manchester Masters, a placement scheme which aims to keep top graduates in the North West, and are all studying for an MSc in Business (specialising in marketing). Commenting on their achievement, Ric says: “We’re absolutely delighted. It was amazing to have your ideas and work validated by people that really know what they’re talking about when it comes to marketing”.

The winning team will get 12 months free Membership of the Institute and The Chartered Institute of Marketing shield for a year. The runners-up were KKA from Lancaster University and The Triple Basis from Manchester Business School.

Eleven teams from universities across the North pitched for the prestigious title. During the day the teams had three minutes and only eight slides to deliver a professional marketing pitch for McCann Manchester’s client Cross Country trains. Based around a real-life scenario, the brief asked teams to identify the target audience and create a core communications idea to reach them.

The judges included Louise Blyth, Marketing Director at Cross Country Trains, Warren Davey, Senior Account Director at McCann Manchester, Diane Earles, Regional Director of The Chartered Institute of Marketing and Keith Fletcher, Director of Education for The Chartered Institute of Marketing. Commenting on the day, Diane Earles said: “The event continues to go from strength to strength and this year was no exception, with the judges having a difficult task to pick their final three.”

The evening award ceremony was presented by The Chartered Institute of Marketing’s regional chair, Davide De Maestri. He announced the three finalists at the beginning of the evening and the shortlisted teams presented their ‘pitch’ one more time in front of the audience, from which the winning team was selected. The judges said: “The competition was fierce but Thinkplant were exceptional in their approach, accuracy in answering the brief and delivery of the presentation and are deserved winners.”
