The talk is aimed at everyone, so if you work with SQL Server you should take something new away. Even if you don’t, it should hopefully provide some insight into how you can get more from your databases and applications.

Web development is getting increasingly difficult with more devices to test and emerging technologies every day. Previous talks I’ve done have been fairly tech heavy, in this talk I’ll also be looking at some of the ideas and non-tech related ideas that I’ve found help me day to day as well.

Twitter has decided to give everyone a chance at securing one of their coveted blue verified badges.
Unfortunately this isn’t going to be done in some Hunger Games style fight-to-the-death battle royal, the San Francisco based firm has decided to take a less brutal approach and create an online application for its users that will grant them the privilege of the check mark.
Before you get you’re hopes up of becoming verified and showing off to your 124 followers, Twitter have said they will only approve “an account that is determined to be of public interest”. To become verified users should have specific pieces of information already attached to their profile such as: phone number, confirmed email address, bio, profile photo, header photo, as well as birthdays - for accounts that are not a company, a brand or an organization.
Once you’ve got all of this on your profile, you’ve officially made it passed step one and Twitter will then ask you a few questions about why your account should be verified - they might even end up asking for a scanned copy of your driving licence or passport to confirm who you say you are. If your account represents a person Twitter want to understand the impact that you have within your field. If it represents a company or brand, they want to know about that companies missions and goals for the future.
Once they’ve interrogated you and found out all they need to know, Twitter will respond to your request via email and let you know if you’ve reached the promised land and secured a blue tick. If you don’t make the cut you can reapply for the same account in another 30 days time following the rejection notice.
Twitter currently has about 187,000 verified accounts, which is a drop in the ocean when you take into account there’s around 320 million monthly active users. It’s those little blue ticks that helped the site gain it’s success in the early days, with users knowing they were following or talking to the real Katy Perry, who is the most followed person on Twitter with 91.7 million followers, instead of an imposter who was just using a picture of a celebrity as their profile picture.
It’s not been made totally clear why the company is now letting people into their exclusive club, those that fall into the category of “public interest” includes accounts that are maintained by public figures and organisations across the music industry, TV, film, government, fashion, politics, religion, media, journalism, business and other key interest areas.
Tina Bhatnagar, Twitter’s vice president of User Services, believes that, ‘Opening up this process will result in more people finding great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for these creators and influencers to connect with a broader audience.’
So if you believe that your account is deemed worthy of being labelled as public interest, get over to Twitter ASAP and get that blue tick secured.

Remember the phrase “If you assume, you make and ass out of u and me”? This was front of mind when I first clapped eyes on the title of last night’s NUX talk.
As humans we have a natural tendency to make assumptions. But we are warned against working with them, especially in business, for fear of making a major cock-up (and subsequently having some smart-arse say they told you so).
So the thought of actively engaging with assumptions, on the surface, seemed like a counter-intuitive thing to do. However, the point of this approach is centred around the principle that, if an idea is fatally flawed, we need to find out before investing a client’s time and money. All assumptions need to be gathered, mapped out and, ultimately, proven or disproven throughout the project in order to do this.
Put in the context of a digital design project, David Draper and Kev Murray of Valtech explained how this approach works best within an Agile environment. Not all assumptions will be fully proven or disproven, and not all will be tackled early on as some may only be relevant to later iterations of a product, not to the creation of the initial MVP. The whole point of an Agile project is that it moves, seeking out information progressively (in this case through data capture and focus groups etc) that will improve the probability of success and therefore shape the way the project develops.
The group workshop that followed gave us the opportunity to, in small teams, work through the process on one of two hypothetical briefs. It demonstrated quite clearly that more people equals more assumptions and therefore less opportunity to miss a stinker. David and Kev include ALL stakeholders in this exercise when working a proper brief - a great suggestion for anyone thinking of adopting it.
It also showed that assumptions can often fall into three columns of urgency - firstly, is an assumption critical to determine whether the idea is needed, secondly is an assumption important in the ability to deliver (technically in this case), and finally is an assumption a great idea to look into for future iterations.
Beyond the application in a design capacity though, what was really interesting was that this approach to thinking can be applied to any project, personal or commercial, regardless of the subject matter. And gives all those involved an appreciation of the challenges likely to be faced along the way, making for a more manageable project with realistic expectations and, in theory, a better chance of success.

This season see's the return of our #OrchardShoots Fantasy Premier League for the eighth year running.
We’re now accepting teams to battle it out in our famous #OrchardShoots league.
It's the usual format when it come's to choosing your squad for the new season, you have a budget of £100 million for your 15 chosen players or one Paul Pogba if you believe what the British papers are saying is the going rate.
If you’ve been involved before then you know the drill. Build your team, choose your colours and then come up with a terrible pun for your team name.
If you’ve never played, or don’t know anything about football then that’s OK! Simply sign-up and have your squad randomly filled with available players and maybe fluke your way to success.
To keep things official we've even got our own trophy and if you're victorious your name could be forever engraved on the plaque. It's 16 inches tall and a glistening symbol of victory for the winner. There's also a football shirt of your choice up for grabs if you can claim victory come the end of the season.
#OrchardShoots is the hashtag you'll need to get involved in on Twitter with our extremely competitive consulatants and other participants in the league.
Pick your squad wisely for the season and don't end up being one of those people who end up using their wildcard in the second week of the season.
