"Film - The Seventh Art"
Ever since the birth of film, commerce has tried to squeeze the art out of cinema. But filmmakers have made sure that at the same time as being a means of making money, movies have also been a home for the visionary, an art form that can transport its audience like no other.

In 1912, film was first called the “Seventh Art" – equal to and maybe more powerful than any other art form before it. More than a century later, this talk will deal with just some of the films that should be aggressively screened for anyone who would ever doubt the status of movies as art.

Danny will discuss the way that film has always borrowed from other art forms including fashion, photography and sculpture. He will also investigate how the medium of film can do something unique and transcendent that no other art form can, an argument for cinema as demolishing the barrier between "high" and "low” art.

The discussion will cover the work of legendary directors such as Jean Cocteau, Stanley Kubrick, David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, Christine Molloy, Joe Lawlor and Chris Marker and visual clips from films including La Belle et La Bete, The Shining, The Elephant Man, Holy Motors and many more.
