Dot York: NUX Takeover
21/06/2018 | York
NUX will be taking over this months DotYork evening meet up.
The people of York are in for a treat, as NUX provide a night of user experience and design from some of their awesome speakers.
Kimberley Bottomley - Yoga & Design: Space Matters
Outside of work, Kimberley is a keen Yogi and board-sport enthusiast. She believes that the things learned on her Yoga mat or snowboard are crucial lessons which have much wider application - none more so than in the workplace. She will speak about her experiences and suggested methods for becoming more aware, more accepting of change and overcoming fear of failure; things which not only help us be more resilient in challenging times but can also lead to more empathetic design.
Ian Franklin - Fitting Usability Labs into Agile Sprints
The traditional usability lab took a long time to organise, was often just a usability bug hunt, and resulted in a big thick report of recommendations that no one read and which took weeks to produce. The talk will cover how to adapt the usability lab method to include discovery and co-creation, record results rigorously, do analysis and reporting within a couple of days of the lab. The talk will also cover how to counter the common objections to user feedback (“its only 5 users”, “it's just anecdotes”) and how to use the lab to get stakeholders on side.
Rob Whiting: Typography & UX: Designing Content that Works for Your Users
Even with the move towards voice driven interfaces, the wide adoption of Design Systems show how important an understanding of good typography is in design. Some of the key areas of typography—legibility, readability, proportion & context—affect your users in different ways and there are a wide range of methods and tools to review & adjust these areas to help make the most of your content for your users.
In his talk, Rob will look at using typographic principles to help your users understand and engage with your content better (and will take a look at why Comic Sans isn't such a bad font).
