'Marketer' or 'Marketeer'? We finally have the answer!
…well, sort of.
I've been working with marketing professionals a long time now, and no-one ever seems too sure which is the correct term. A couple of recent Twitter posts on the topic prompted me to try and get to the bottom of it.
A quick consultation with Oxford Dictionaries tells us that a Marketeer is "A person who sells goods or services in a market".
Oxford Dictionaries also tells us that the term 'marketer' is a derivative of market without its own definition.
So, that should be the end of it. Marketeer it is.
But it's not.
I decided to ask the local marketing community in and around the North West of England what they called themselves, and I received a variety of responses and opinions from a range of marketing professionals, including:
" I went with 'Marketeer'. Sounds a bit more active and less like 'door to door'. Also reminds me of 'Musketeer' which isn't a bad thing. "
- Marco, Marketing Manager
" Marketeer rhymes with racketeer, and possibly creates the wrong mental associations... "
- Jeff, Online Marketing Assistant
" Definitely Marketer for me. Though any over the use of 'Guru' "
- Stephen, Marketing Manager
" Marketer! It sounds more professional.... we are not Chartered Marketeers! Although, I do like the creative play on words. "
- Louise, CIM Programme Director & Marketing Lecturer
" Definitely Marketer...Marketeer sounds more like someone who should go to work with an Epee and flouncy hat! "
- Michele, Marketing Manager
" Certainly marketeer, although I am concerned by its close visual similarity to meerkat. "
- Richard, Head of Marketing
" I'm shocked, surprised and appalled, and can only assume that some of you must work in marketeering not marketing "
- René, Agency Business Development Director
Of the votes we received, over 78% said 'marketer' was their prefered title.
There were lots of references made to being seen as a musketeer type figure in their preference for, or against marketeer.
A quick search on Linkedin gave me over 20,500 people making reference to marketer, with just over 3,700 mentioning marketeer on their profile. That's an even more emphatic 85:15 split in favour of marketer.
So, I guess that makes Marketer the winner.
Do you agree, or do you have a totally different opinion?
Or maybe you're with Deborah, Marketing & Communications Executive:
" Not sure I have an opinion (or care!) either way. I do sometimes think the problem with marketers / marketeers is a tendency to overthink the insignificant. You can call me whatever tickles your fancy. "
Even more succinctly put by Bev, Head of Marketing:
" I'm not too bothered about what I am called, more what I deliver and how I am perceived.... "
