The Best Marketing Podcasts For Your Daily Commute
The podcast has risen, fallen, and been reincarnated more times than you can count. But, the world of podcasts is more popular than ever with big hits like ‘Serial’ capturing the minds of thousands, encouraging uncountable others to pick up a microphone and get recording their own podcasts.
So with that, here are my recommendations for some morning commute learning… from a quick hit to an hour long in depth discussion, talking everything marketing.
Social Media Marketing Happy Hour
If you’re looking for an answer to a specific problem you are facing - this is probably the podcast for you. The 20 minute episodes focus on one topic or issue at a time, so if you’re looking for advice on a problem or just looking to expand your knowledge in a particular area this podcast will make it easy to do so. If you are looking for a new podcast to follow weekly, it would still a good one to pick up as it is pretty easy listening. They draw upon real life examples which are genuinely informative and it never feels preachy or patronising. The hosts discuss different ideas, things they’ve tried or heard about, there are no right or wrong answers just interesting things to think about and try.
The Science of Social Media
Hosted by Buffer, these episodes are a good listen with some very interesting facts. For example, did you know that using an emoji activates the same part of the brain and replicates the same experience as face to face contact, making us feel more connected? So keep using those emojis!! This fact was in their ‘7 Psychology Facts That All Social Media Marketers Should Know’ - which I’d recommend listening to. Alongside impressive facts, this podcast often covers tips and tricks for running your social accounts, information on the latest platform updates and how to utilise them.
The Influencer Podcast
This one, as you can guess, is all about influencers. Focussing heavily on Instagram, it’s a good one to listen to if that’s your main platform - particularly for people working in the fashion/beauty industry. Varying from short 5 minute tips episodes to hour long interviews with industry professionals, there is a real variety of content available. Whilst it is aimed at marketing professionals, anyone who has a general interest in influencer marketing or just spends a lot of time on social media and would like to understand it more would also thoroughly enjoy this podcast, as it also covers issues like self-esteem, false portrayals, and living up to expectations on Instagram and other sites.
Marketing School is created by Neil Pattel and Eric Siu, consisting predominantly of ‘how to’ content with each episode lasting roughly 5 minutes. They will give advice on age-old debates and problems but will also give you something new to try or think about. This podcast is really easy to digest and would be suitable for a range of different levels - plus since they are so short you could learn something new every morning whilst you’re brushing your teeth, it would take no time out of your day leaving your morning commute free to sing-a-long to the Mamma Mia soundtrack (or whatever floats your boat). Every day can be a school day.
Marketing Over Coffee
An informal podcast that again is easy enough listen to. The episodes are around 20-30 minutes long, and they predominantly discuss what’s new in marketing that week. This is one to follow on the regular rather than dive into when you need something, as the titles are fairly vague so you are never 100% sure what will be discussed or in how much detail. But if you’re looking for a regular addition to your routine to keep up to date with the world of marketing then this is probably the one for you!
As the title sort of gives away, this is all about the content writing! It’s an interview format, so every week you’re learning from a new industry expert. It focuses predominantly on copywriting, but it does also cover topics such as SEO, email marketing, and digital marketing. The host has a very soothing voice so I wouldn’t recommend listening to it late at night… but it does make it nice and easy to digest as an early morning listen!
Call to Action
This podcast has a lot of good reviews and recommendations - but I’ve got to admit it’s not for me. I have included it anyway because of it’s good press, so I may be in the minority. This one is much more focussed on analytics - conversion rates, retention, click rates and so on, so if that’s where you’re interests lie, it’ll be a good listen. It again follows a debate and interview format, and the content is genuinely informative and really interesting. My main issue was staying focussed - I found the presenters voice hard to follow. However, I cannot deny the good content they produce so by all means give it a listen and see if it’s for you because you will definitely learn something!
