As important as it is to have a portfolio full of good work - it is just as important to make sure you are displaying it in the best way possible.
It is all too common for portfolio's to contain good work but be displayed badly. If that is the case, it means it can be hard to see the quality of your work - which ultimately will significantly decrease your chances of getting the job. So, with that in mind, we've done a little research on online portfolio platforms. None of these are a one-size fits all solution, it is totally dependent on what works best for you and your work, but hopefully these summaries can help you find the best option for you.
Everyone at some point has used Adobe software, whether in passing or on the regular. This is because it is established and reliable - including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign... Portfolio is no different. The platform allows you to create your own portfolio website, with five layouts to choose from, and access to Adobe Typekit (A library of thousands of exclusive premium fonts). Portfolio is a live-editing platform, so you can make design changes and see them in real-time. Portfolio can be easily integrated with Behance (also Adobe owned), to import your projects between sites. Portfolio is free with a Creative Cloud account.
This platform is great for filmmakers and photographers, with its sleek design and modern features it really helps expose your photos and polish the presentation of your portfolio. There are six different themes available on this platform, which allow you to change layout, colour and can adapt to your design accordingly. All themes will allow you to use your own custom HTML and CSS, and you can schedule posts for a later date. This platform is paid for, and billed either monthly or annually depending on preference.
Another popular choice of platform for designers is Weebly. This is largely down to it’s wide array of features, and it’s SEO functionalities. This means better rankings and visibility, and alongside its in-built marketing tools, the site is also very popular with ecommerce customers. It is easy to use as it has a simple drag and drop feature, and offers unlimited storage (dependent on package). This platform allows you to embed video as well as host your own. Available to use for free, or by paid subscription.
Ideal for photographers, Viewbook is an intuitive platform that is easy to set up. All of your photos on Viewbook will be sent to Cloud automatically, and it works incoherence with Adobe Lightroom - perfect if you already use this software! Viewbook provides a plugin that means you can upload your newest photographs to your portfolio directly from Adobe Lightroom. The platform has also been designed to adapt to devices from iPhone, iPad and other similar devices. Perhaps a simpler alternative to some of the other platforms, but can be effective for photography based portfolios. This platform is fairly inexpensive, and billed annually.
Similar to Fabrik, this platform allows real-time front end editing and has the capability for custom HTML and CSS. The sites formatted themes come with a selection of different page layouts, ideal to adapt the current photo style to whatever layout preferences you have on your own. The advantage of Format is that it offers a special platform to streamline your work directly to clients from within your portfolio; all work can be copyrighted through watermarks; and clients can favourite & download images. This platform is great for illustrators and art workers. Can be billed monthly or annually - no free option.
